Scripture Focus:
“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.”
— Matthew 6:28-29 (NIV)“Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.”
— Luke 12:27 (NIV)
There’s a gentle, almost poetic invitation in Jesus’ words: “Consider the lilies.”
Not to rush.
Not to strive.
Not to stress.
Just… to consider.
In a world that constantly tells us to hustle harder, do more, and control every outcome, these words settle into our hearts. Jesus, knowing our tendency to worry and overthink, points our attention to something simple, beautiful, and wildly free: the lilies of the field.
They don’t toil.
They don’t spin.
They don’t fret about what they’ll wear or how they’ll survive.
And yet—they beautifully blossom.
A Lesson in Trust
Jesus isn’t just admiring flowers here. He’s teaching us something crucial about the heart of God and the nature of trust.
The lilies grow without striving because they are rooted in a system that provides for them: sun, rain, soil—all orchestrated by the Creator. They are not anxious because they are grounded in the faithfulness of something (Someone) greater than themselves.
And isn’t that the same system we’re invited into?
If God clothes the fields with beauty, even though the flowers are fleeting, how much more will He care for you—His beloved creation?
Beauty Without Performance
There’s a quiet, counter-cultural message woven into this metaphor:
Your value is not in what you produce.
The lilies are beautiful not because of what they do, but because of how they are. Their beauty is inherent. Unforced. Undeserved. And so is yours.
We live in a world that prizes performance—checking boxes, achieving goals, earning approval. But Jesus invites us to simply be—to live rooted in the confidence that we are known, seen, and cherished by God.

What Would It Look Like to Live Like a Lily?
To live like a lily is not to abandon responsibility, but to abandon the lie that our striving is what sustains us. It means:
- Resting in God’s provision even when outcomes are unclear
- Choosing presence over pressure
- Trusting that beauty can exist in simplicity
- Believing that you are cared for—deeply and consistently—by a God who doesn’t overlook wildflowers or wandering hearts
Freely Joyful Living
At Freely Joyful, we believe joy isn’t found in perfection or performance, but in freedom. And part of that freedom is found in this sacred invitation to let go of anxiety and lean into trust.
So today, take a moment to step outside. Look at the flowers—even the ones growing through cracks in the sidewalk. And remember: they don’t strive, but they’re still beautiful. They don’t worry, but they’re still provided for.
You are, too.
Consider the lilies.
And breathe.
